
Dr. Olujimi Coker
Olujimi Coker is a Consultant Laparoscopic & Colorectal Surgeon and former CEO of Lagoon Hospitals Group, Lagos, Nigeria. He qualified from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and did his specialist surgical training in the United Kingdom. He is an Intercollegiate Fellow of the Royal College of surgeons of England and Fellow of West African College of Surgeons. He is also a graduate of the advanced management program at INSEAD European Institute of Business in France.
He was Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Northern General Hospital and University of Sheffield in January 1999 but joined Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Trust as Consultant General Surgeon with specialist interest in Coloproctology and minimal access surgery in Nov1999.
In 2010 he led a team of Nigerian Diaspora surgeons to support the surgical strategy at Hygeia Nigeria. He was appointed Chief of Surgery at Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos in 2011. In January 2016, he became Chief Medical Director, and appointed CEO in 2019. During his tenure as CEO, he turned around a loss-making business to a highly profitable one through the establishment of patient-centred and safety culture along with enhanced staff welfare.
As Head of Clinical Governance, he was part of the team at Lagoon Hospitals to achieve Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2011 that was a first in Sub-Saharan Africa. He then led re-accreditation efforts in different management positions in 2014, 2017 and 2021. Lagoon Hospitals was awarded Private Hospital of the year at the Nigeria Excellence Awards ceremony in 2017, 2018 and 2021.
He is a board member of the Society for Quality Healthcare in Nigeria (SQHN) and the Chairman, SQHN Accreditation Committee that developed and piloted the International Society in Healthcare-approved SQHN accreditation standards for Nigerian hospitals. He is the President of Laparoscopic Surgery Society of Nigeria.
